That is because Yahoo is a directory and Google is a search engine. A directory contains informations and links which are selected to be relevant by those who run the directory whereas in a search engine, it gets links from the whole World Wide Web.
By the way, I am a die-hard Yahoo! fan. =)

For me it is because google is fast. Also i can search for web pages only from my country with a single click. I can cut my search down to images , videos , and file types all without much effort.
Yahoo is more like the friendly and happy face search engine for those who don't mind taking several minutes just to fond the word 'Katakana'.
Google instantly gives a list and images as well.
