Friends will be visiting SF for the Folsom Street Fair/Leatherfest in couple weeks; plane, hotel room booked. Have already hit Google and found couple restaurant links. Now refining search--HELP!!!

Looking for reasonably priced eating places for use during the Fair---geographic area is South of Market District, between 7th and 12th Streets.

They also plan to do: Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown (both adore Peking Duck, BTW), Japantown, Ghirardelli Square, and Napa Valley. Any really great "dining experiences" in these areas, that DON'T require a 2nd mortgage on a house? I'd like for them to have the best time possible and do NOT know the city, so any insider information would be great. Thanks!

Will post addt'l data when avail abt preferred food types; assume moderate prices for most part, with 1-2 really nice dinners (little black dress/tie and jacket).

Well there's plenty of inexpensive, good food in Chinatown and in j-town too. But you might want to head out to the mission - Valencia between 16th and 24th has a lot of great little places. Some of them are a bit trendy (i.e. not cheap), but a lot of them have good food at a good price. Watercress for instance (between 22nd and 23rd).

In j-town there's a good place for okonomiyaki if your friends like that - Izumiya on the 2nd floor at the western end of the mall (but be warned that this is just a little cafe style place). but for sushi go to ebisu on 9th avenue out near GG park (inner sunset).

chez papa up on potrero hill is pretty good, but it's not cheap. same with Kokkari over near jackson square if you like greek.

and of course up in napa (yountville) the french laundry is truly outstanding, but you want to save your pennies up before going there. assuming that you manage to get a reservation of course.

Oh, and as far as soma between 7th and 12th, not much in that area comes to mind. and i did live in soma recently.
