LOL, grab your spoon and welcome to the alphabet soup of computer networking. I'm guessing we have more TLAs (three letter acronyms) than any other industry.

What makes it worse are the lovely NESTED acronyms, like POS which is Packet Over SONET where SONET is Synchronous Optical NETwork.

What makes it even worse still is that every vendor comes up with their own acronym for their own flavor of a technology and so it goes... No end in sight as new technology is developed so hang on.

Just make sure Wikipedia is in your favorites, it's gonna get even more interesting.

ADSL: Asymetric digital subscriber line. It splits your phone line into 3 channels. Upload, download and regular phone which means you can use your normal phone while connected. Its maximum speed goes at about 8Mbps. The upload and download speed are not equal (Unlike DSL). ADSL offers relatively slow upload speeds

WAN: Wide area network. It's most of the times wireless. It's a big network in which information is spread be it file sharing or internet connection sharing. It's like the wide etworks ISPs provide to their users.

LAN: Local area network. It's much smaller between two or more PCs it's wired otherwise it's called wLAN. It's mostly used for sharing like in office complexes and for gaming and all...

3G stands for third generation which is the 3d generation of mobile phone networks and services. 3G offers video streaming and broadband internet on the go, not to mention video conferences. It's even being implemented into some laptops. And it goes beyond the hot spots of WiFi

GPRS is the general, traditional way to transfer information between 2G enabled mobile phones. This protocol is also used for the service "WAP" which consists of browsing the net through the GPRS protocol using your 2G phone.

I hope this helps
