actually it was the guitar played by ritche blackmore and john lord's hammond organ that started the first riff. the middle solo is by blackmore. the rest of the beat is by the combination of the the bass and the hammond organ bass paddle.
so its drums, bass, guitar and hammond organ plus ian gillian awsome voice.

Obviously a bass was used to get such an awesome riff, drums, just basically all the kind of instrument that you would need to kick start a band...
I love that song, that was the first ever song that i learnt to play on a guitar...

The main riff in the rock classic Smoke on the water was played on bass guitar who
s feed was run thrue a 'new' device called a crunch box ,it's a high gain device that adds that sound.

deep purple is a six piece band. that is, 2 guitars, bass, keyboards, drums and vocals. the solo is played on electric guitar.
