Godfather 1&2, together they are the benchmark of all gangster movies. Others have been great, but without these two there would be no Scarface, Goodfellas etc.

Normally I would answer the Godfather. But how about a little gangster movie that didn't get much press? Miller's Crossing.

When I first watched Goodfellas, it chilled me. It had such an in-your-face quality that it's hard to forget even after not having seen it for ten years. The scene where Joe Pesci pummels another man to death is just shocking. And to think he's such a short man.
This is one of, if not the best of, Martin Scorsese's work and in my opinion, the best gangster movie of all time.

Scarface
Scarface is a combination of events in real life and creativity of the writer put together. The story is about a Cuban immigrant with one and only ambition: to become powerful, to have the whole world to himself. Al Pacino portrays Tony Montana, a nobody who came to America and lived the American dream by becoming a drug king. Of course, at the end, he faced the inevitable for a movie character of such nature- he was killed. Directed by Brian DePalma and written by Oliver Stone.
