South America's Amazon River is the world's largest because it carries more water to the sea than any other river. The Amazon's discharge at its mouth is approximately 7 million cubic feet per second.
The Amazon is the world's second longest river as well, coming in just a tad shorter than the Nile River at 4,049 miles (6,516 kilometers) long.
Nile, first longest river is in Egypt and greatest river 4,160 miles long! In fact, Africa has two of the ten longest rivers. The Congo, which flows through central Africa, is Number 8 at 2,718 miles long.

The Nile (Arabic: اÙÙÙÙ an-nÄ«l, Egyptian Arabic dialect "el neil"; Ancient Egyptian iteru), a river in Africa, is regarded by most authorities as being the longest river on Earth. The Nile has two distinct tributaries, the White Nile and Blue Nile, the former being the longer of the two. The White Nile rises in the Great Lakes region of central Africa, with the most distant source in southern Rwanda 2°16′55.92″S, 29°19′52.32″E, and flows north from there through Tanzania, Lake Victoria, Uganda and southern Sudan, while the Blue Nile starts at Lake Tana in Ethiopia, flowing into Sudan from the east. The two sections meet near Khartoum.
The northern section of the river flows almost entirely through desert, from Sudan into Egypt, a country whose civilisation has depended on the river since ancient times. Most of the population of Egypt and all of its cities, with the exception of those near the coast, lie along those parts of the Nile valley north of Aswan; and nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along the banks of the river.
The Nile ends in a large delta that flows into the Mediterranean Sea.
