Ok, I'm asking this, because when new horror films come out and they get great ratings, and the journalist gets hooked up to a thing that measures their heart rate and they're like "this will scare the pants of you" - It just doesnt.

All recent horror films are always hyped right up, but some of the older ones are really dated now and you can see all the (not-so) special effects.

I want to watch a horror film, that is so scary, its gonna make me sick, and make me not able to sleep for a week. I want to be so scared!

Any one have any ideas?

Just for reference, I have seen the Ring, the Grudge, Hostel, all the Freddy films, all the Hellraisers, Poltergeist, Boogeyman, Cabin Fever, Descent. And a whole lot of otthers to , but you suggestions would be appreciated.

Se7en? Aliens? Hostel? No no no no, you're not getting this.

Although someone suggested Phantasm, I saw that when i was about 12, that was pretty gruesome actually when that ball drills through the blokes head.

I'd suggest you see "Fire In The Sky".

Trust me. Nightmares for weeks.

You must see the original Tod Browning Freaks...made just after Dracula, featuring real sideshow performers as the real stars of the film...doesn't need special effects...the atmosphere at the climax will scare the life out of you...trust me on this...
I agree wholeheartedly with anyone that picks Silence of the Lambs...psychological horror is way more frightening than gore...though I love a great gore movie...if you dig those too, while these are actually both funny, some of the scenes might well stick with you for a long long time...I'd pick Re-Animator and Dead Alive (the Peter Jackson one)...two of my all-time favorites

Try "the Haunting", the original 1963 version.
Also "Exorcist 3" is pretty scary

The Japanese version of Ring was amazing, i was terrified when the girl crawled out of the telly.

I say most modern gore fest horror films are rubbish, they dont use any thought and just use gore and killing to scare, i hate the jump scenes, when someone opens a door and a friend is there unexpectantly and scares the character then next time its the killer....rubbish
