how come people like Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr, Ghandi, Nelson Mandela, Abraham Lincoln, Patrick Henry, Jesus Christ are viewed as role models? Instead, people worship stupid celebs like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears who probably have not done anything to deserve the title role model?

Very good observation. I believe you can also notice the difference between the so called role models like Britney Spears and the mainstream role models like Nelson Mandela. The latter will leave or have left a legacy and values that are time-tested and people still refer to with admiration and awe while the former leave us empty with a very short-lived admiration and only to a very defined and select people. If you were to list down the values they present to us, you would not go beyond 3. So the depraved society in which we stay revere pop idols and people in the entertainment who do not have very admirable characteristics but lot of question marks - no excellence in morals or anything like that. Most of it is face value and not inner character that we would like to be identified with.

I love your question; I have often wondered that myself. So often people worship celebs, no names because some celebs do much for charity. Reminds me of that advertisement can you name your child's teacher's name. I truly believe that our role models should be that unknown solder that make the ultimate sacrifice for his or her country, the teacher who gives his or her time to help a handy cap student learn, the doctor who really cares about his or her patents health rather then money, the mom or dad that makes sure their child is safe and happy. I could go on and on. Thank you for such a wonderful question.

It's the next generation. Schooling isn't like it was. You used to learn about the pillars of society, but now, everybody is so unhappy with their own lives, they have to live preciously through a celebrity's life. Time to get the history books out and teach the kids who the real role models are!

God knows...another good role model by the way.
People seem more obsessed and targeted to money, fame and being on TV or in the movies. And not those people who stood or stand for principles, ethics and morality. And please don't any one respond with that moral relevancy crap. There is right and wrong; not well maybe...

The media gives so much attention to these idiots that people believe they are the "good guys". Many people, especially the young and ignorant do not and cannot think for themselves, sadly,
