Society wishes to be a God to us.

Society would like to decide what clothes you wear, what you value, what you pursue. how you decide too look, what kind of spouse you marry, Waht you do on saturday night, how you decorate your house or apt. what kind of nationalities you associate with, what you eat. Isn't this what a oppresive god would do? this came to me as I thought about why, we as people have so much difficulty living freely. I don't know if your religious or nt, but I think that really is an auxillory point. My point is this,, think about the point. not a cosoraray thought, as we have been conditioned, but a true, unbiased thought, and answer the question, sincere 12. that's all i ask.

I'm not sure I know what you mean. Care to elaborate?

Thanks for elaborating.
I don't think society wants to be God, as God wants us to love Him/Her and to love others, mainly.

I think the societies we live in are ...well, in the "first world" societies, they are too concerned with getting material possessions, and watching t.v.. Not many people are concerned with deep consideration of their value sytems and what the long-term effects of their actions will be. (I also think this is part of a social ordering by those with extreme political power. They're "dumbing us down.")
People are unconcerned with what a simpler life might actually give us; they just want a bigger t.v. and more DVDs, and of course, safe kids. And in order to get those new THINGS they have to support the system that will get those thigns assembled.
That's part of it.
Another part of it is how comfortable people feel, and how comfortable CAN they feel. People like comfort. But what they don't see is that comfort is the brother of complacency. (And complacency is a poison taken one drop at a time.) This takes place on the physical and psycho-social level. If there are too many variants of people, there are too many choices and value-based decisions to make. therefore, anyone being too varied from the norm in any extreme will be "outed," so as to not have to give so much thought to their values.

I hope that's a good answer.

Yes and no! Society expects us to conform to its rules, do what is defined, by our own group as right versus wrong however ...
I wouldn't go as far as saying that society wishes to be a god to us, simply that our societal skills/lack of, values/lack of, makes us either full part of the cultural group we live in or sees us outcasts simply because we want to follow our own rules.

I think it's all a matter for each and every individual to decide what rules suit/doesn't them, what trend is acceptable/not acceptbale and do what they feel best for themselves, meaning thay can feel happy while not hurting others.
