If you have deep pockets I'm not really sure why your asking this question. Not that the M3 is cheap by any stretch, but its also not quite as sporty as the 911 carrera. Performance wise I'm not really sure what the specs are for the 911 and I'm a BMW guy myself so the thought that the M3 has 350+hp for a car of that size it more than ok by my standards, but the porche probably has a motor that's pumping out just as much HP or more, and you have to think about that power to weight ratio! The porsche is a lot lighter than the bimmer so more than likely it will fly. Both cars have pros and cons like anything else the porsche has less room more of a sports car less of a classy car, though the bimmer is very sporty as well and its tested BMW m3 CsL against a Lambo(Italian ellite) and they were neck and neck now that to me is impressive. I mean overall u should go with the 911 but that M3 is a wickedly cool car that would not disappoint you.

It's very simple, you will like the BMW but you will love the Porsche.
BMW's are 10 a penny, good cars, well built but the series 1 has made them a run of the mill brand, the just don't have any prestige about them.
Porsche have it all, look fantastic, sound awesome and are more of an experience to drive.
Maybe not as comfortable or as easy to drive as a Bm but more rewarding when you get get it right, you will become a better and more skilled driver because of it.
I've had them both but now own a Porsche C4s and eveyone admires it, strangers come over to chat and it attracts the ladies like a million pound bank account.
It is hard to explain but the Porsche has character, has a certain feel and sound, if you buy a BMW you will have a very good car, but in the back of your mind you'll always wish you'd bought the Porker.

Depending on what you're looking for. 911 and M3 are totally different animals. Both fast, but 911 has many different variations. The M3 has three different variants, but two are only available. The regular M3 comes with either manual of SMG (sequential manual gears...kinda like step-tronic), the M3 CSL is more competitive, but listed at $130k and good luck getting one into the US. The M3 GTR most people can't afford it except for racing teams ($1.2M)
911s start at $75k(Carrera) and goes up to $180k(GT3).
Both cars handle differently and have very different characteristics. Both are high-maint., but a blast to drive.
Drive both cars and see what you like better. When you're shelling out at least $55k for a car, you have some serious homework to do.

I used to have an M3 CSL for about three months. I went through a atage of really liking BMW and had a 645 at the same time.
I have to tell you that it was the worst experience of my life. BMW are rubbish. The new 911 is a great car. I did a track day in my new F430 at brands hatch and met a guy who wanted to try it so we did a swap( I was in the passenger seat mind you). Anyway I was really impressed with it.
BMW M3 you will be wasting your time they are dated interior quality is very poor and the dealers are snobby bunch of twats. I should know I deal with them everyday through my business. Porsche dealers sometimes are a bit snobby, but pick the right salesman and the right car you will have a great experience.
Are there any other cars on your shortlist, because I could make a few suggestions. I replace my cars every 6 to 12 months an I run 3 at a time. I wont sell the Ferrari though because it is irreplacable at the moment, and I can't afford to an Enzo.

The porche is a great car.But have you ever tried the M3.This car is still considered to be among the best sport cars in the world. It can also carry more passengers than the porche and in case if you haven't noticed , on the dash board of the M3 there is a button where SPORT is written.Take a test drive and try the sport button,I'm sure you'll love it.The interior is very luxurious and comfortable. As for its body kit, simply outstanding.

personally neither. The porsches don't have the stature they used to as they are so common and BMW's are a bit chav (except Z4 and X5).
If you're looking for a sporty car go for something a bit different.
We had a Lotus elise which was definately a head turner. Not the most practical car in the world though. Quite difficult for women to get out without looking like a prat and supermarket shopping consists of 2 bags and the boot is full. It's a great car for looks and speed plus we had ours for 6 months and sold it for the same we paid for it. They are great at holding their value. But make sure you have all the history and they it's had a specific service done (c service I think) which involves the cam belt changing. It's really expensive and you have to take the car to bits. If you get one just after it's been changed you won't have any problems.

Personally
instead of an m3 I would get a 96 e36 coupe body strip it down fit a nice looking ac body kit and carbon bonnet wing mirors and ac spoiler custom recarro interior tint windows fit a quick shifter slammed on coilovers with the sexy limited edition ac split rims and drop in an m3 evo 3.2litre 6cyl engine with t3 hybrid turbo with intercooler and tuned to its max bhp.
or for a more sensibly answer if you looking for and every day car thats got nice amounts of power but has boot space and passanger ability then go far an M3 but if your looking for a fast fun head turner then its gotta be a 911

PORSCHE 911 everytime - one of my favourite cars but it depends on what you want it for - 911 is definitely a 'chick magnet' kinda car & you'll turn everyones head as you're driving in it whereas the M3 is a really macho car, a 'grown-up boy racer' car - esp with all the modifications

Both car is NICE and SPEED, for more speed go for 911, and Nice plus alot of mod you go for M3. I go for M3 I glad I have one too, but after 6 month I got bored with the car so more than 10G pump in the car for Mod. I fall in love with my M again. Good Luck and enjoy your pick.
