I guess it would depend on the situation... probably not too much unless it was effecting my work or directed at me.

My late darling partner Gwenneth's family were the worst bigots; but at work? One smart young thing said as we came in from lunch "Oh look, here come the spinsters ! Couldn't get a man to save themselves'. Gwen merely smiled and asked "Well fellow spinster, are we as one ?" No real need to ask, then or ever..

I work with someone like that. I know better than to engage him in conversation about anything we disagree with, and he knows better than to talk bigot-speak with me. We get along ok on a work level. I don't have to be friends with anyone I work with but I am obligated to ge a good "co-worker" and that feeling is mutual between us. Whenever I get a chance to point out when he contradicts himself, I do so, but gently and in a non-emotional manner. I want to be an example to him of someone who does not practice bigotry. I take some pleasure in knowing that his wife agrees with me on many issues and the owners of the company won't promote him probably because they think he's a wing-nut, although he is a hard worker. I dont' waste my energy trying to reason or argue with him. Not worth it.

Depends, what kind of work. If it's a work that involves a lot of personal opinions, then yes. It's VERY bothersome.

Otherwise, just ignore him and tell him to shut up. Tell him that your job have no relationship whatsoever with what race are you or what sex you have. As long as the job is done well, then tell him to put a sock in it.

everyone has freedom of speech, but if your opinions and beliefs are so vocal and offensive that they hurt others I wouldn't be able to work with that. If they don't try to shove thier beliefs on me I am fine with whatever they want to do.

yes, it would bother me and it has, I have already had that experience, I tried to turn a deaf ear. I didn't allow myself to become involved in anything he said.
