There is no such thing as a LEGAL download especially if you are using a p2p download program... The only way that limewire keeps itself from being shut down is they ask you up front before you can install the program on your pc is by displaying 2 statements " no I won't", or "Maybe I will"... The only songs that you can download for free, legally is off of the artists site. If they do not offer you any free downloads, then try the record company that the group/artist is through. Otherwise, I hate to say it, but you are SOL, and will have to break down and purchase their cd for the 2-3 songs that you want.

Well, there are pay-for-download sites where you buy the songs online, or pay a one-time subscription fee and download as many songs as you like.
I think there are no music sites that are legal which offer current music online... you can listen to songs online though.

there is www.spiralfrog.com where you can download audio, videos and mp3 though it isn't for iPods. It launches at December 2006. It's legal [ I know it coz they showed it on tv] and it's free! I also asked Yahoo! Answers if Spiral frog is free.. and all i got from them is a big, old YES.
and anyway, i kinda read here in yahoo! answers as well that you can sometimes get a virus from limewire and it is semi-legal... =)
also there is itunes... i think... yes i know it is legal but i'm not sure if you have to download itunes to your computer... i'm not sure about itunes... even though it is quite popular...

I think i got the best answer go to limewire.com you could download music and videos for free and can also burn them do. If you want pro pro is the speed factor that help you download it fast only for 18 98 with a credit or debit card. You could type in any songs you want most of the new and old songs there. You could even save it on your computer. If you got a dvd burner you good because it can burn both.

many indie sites have demo tracks for free download.
there is no such thing as free & legal for copywrited music.
'cept the weekly freebie on sites like itunes.
