Malaysia is too close to the equator. Most cyclones form at about 5 degrees north or south of the equator. Cyclones can't form very easily any closer to the equator.

Typhoon VAMEI (27-28 DEC 2001) actually did hit Malaysia but it was only a weak typhoon.

BECUASE THE HURRICANE DECIDED TO MAKE A TURN...OOPS

or because the eye of the storm was above Malaysia.

there is not enough open space for the wind to pick up enough speed to become a hurricane or tornado.
