I already have a woollen magnetic underlay as well as a ripple type foam one on top of that and the bed is still too firm for me. I don't want to go to the expense of buying a new mattress especially when I can't tell if it is ok without actually sleeping on it.

Try memory foam. I added a pad to my bed, and found it quite comfortable.

If you are using a box spring under your mattress, remove it. The box spring firms up the mattress so it has a longer life span. This is not something I would normally recommend though, but it would be the least expensive fix for you.

If you are not fussy and budget cautious, you can get those cheap mattress and they are really softer than the pricey ones.
