What's the best place to buy college books, new or used? What are your experiences with them?

I would try ISBN.NU
It gives you a list of different prices for the book from different websites.
I've used Amazon marketplace and haven't had any bad experiences with it and it's pretty safe since it's through Amazon and not a direct sale. I've tried Barnes and Nobles' used books section when the prices were less than Amazon.

You can also try to buy books from other students who have taken the course. From experience, people like me rather sell it cheaper to someone else who will make good use of the book rather than selling it back to the school for less than half the price they bought it for.

USED... publishers are out to make money and sadly 2nd & 3rd editions (new) rarely contain anything that is vital for studying. If your course requires a new edition, skip it and buy an older one. You can always copy the missing info if you need (of course within copyright laws).

My three favorite sites for cheap used books are Amazon, eCampus, and Alibris. They're all consistently much cheaper and the quality is still pretty good. Hope this helps!

i have only used amazon.com. it has worked great for me. i only buy used books from very highly rated sellers. if you want to get them quick however, you are going to have to pay extra for fast shipping. another place you could try is half.com. don't bother buying the books at your school bookstore, you can usually find them for half the price online.
