If you haven't got any good or reasonable reason for being late what do you say instead. Best lies I mean.

No lies needed, the truth. Sorry, I got a late start today, sorry I overslept, sorry I did not account for the heavy traffic. It doesn't matter to your boss why you are late, you still are counted late, and get enoughs lates, and you get written up and fired.
They still ask why, and I do not understand why they ask, since it doesn't matter. Maybe they want to seem helpful, or that they are trying to solve the problem. Or maybe the policy is that they have to ask.

I am not sure what the best is, but I have always head that it is best to have some sort of evidence (is this case manufactured evidence). For example, I was once late for work at my first real job after college. I knew that the owner was a dog lover. I said that my dog was VERY sick all night and I though she was dieing of poisoning or something. I said that I had rushed here to the vet that morning and I came in carrying the collar and leash. It worked like a charm.

BOSSES HAVE HEARD EVERY LIE THERE IS ABOUT BEING LATE FOR WORK OR NOT SHOWING UP THE BEST WAY IS NOT TO LIE FOR IF YOU LIE YOU SIN AND ONE LIE LEADS TO ANOTHER PERSON HAS A JOB AND HE /SHE IS BEING PAID TO BE AT THAT JOB SO IF YOU ARE LATE OR A NO SHOW THEN YOU ARE STEALING FROM THAT COMPANY AND THAT TOO IS A SIN SO THERE ARE TWO SINS RIGHT THERE HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY
