Referring to lots of movies portraying different centuries, street markets has always being around. Each farmer will produce different types of food as it sells these types of food to others, while buying other types with the $.

Before street markets, each person would just farm all the food their need or barter things for food.....

Markets usually organized in the center of towns and villages, on the steps of church. Also, along the docks of busy harbors. Neighbor also commonly shared or bartered for food shares at barn raisings. Neolithic man met seasonally at trade crossroads and villages and future market style distribution was born.

In the US, food was produced locally and either bartered for goods and services or sold in small stores, called 'general' stores. People in rural areas attempted to be self-sufficient and grew everything that they ate. However if the harvest failed or was meager, this could lead to starvation or worse.

Most people grew their own crops and raised therir own meat like chickens cows and pigs. They also hunted in the woods. When towns started going up people sold their surplus for cash or bartered for goods and services to small stores.
