Shia beleived that Ali should have been the Caliph after Muhammed died rather than his father-in-law.
Iran has the largest percent of Shia. In Iraq the Sunnis are the minority to the larger Shia population.
The Fatamids were Shia leaders of Egypt a thousand years ago until they were defeated by Saladin.

i dunno how it started.
me a sunni. they live in india(quite small in no.), iraq( about half of them are shias)etc
