Because they think they'll grown up to be Paris Hilton or the next Shaquille O'Neal. The media has force fed students pipe dreams and now education isn't as popular as it used to be. No one wants to work hard and struggle to the top. They just want to be famous and live a luxurious life.

What makes you think the students are not learning? They ARE learning. From other sources other than school. Remember when Jurassic Park film first surfaced? Kids as young as 5 can name most if not all the dinosaurs. Some can even correctly categorise which dinosaur belonged to which period.
Kids nowadays are born in a world full of technological advances. They are more energetic and are multi-taskers. They read a book in front of the television with music blasting on their ipods. Teachers are brought up to believe that in order for learning to take place, there must be complete silence. They expect their students to behave the same manner.
The golden question is, are we preparing the children for their future or our past? Who actually has the learning disability?

Because with technology today, so many distractions and overwhelming amount of visual, audio stimuli, students are too excited (not the "good" excited) to sit down and listen through a class. They want it now, they want it loud and they want it fast ( like their video and computer games, their music..)
My father was telling me how they used to go the library and look through tons of books to find the particular passage they were supposed to write about. Now, not only it takes me two seconds, but I can also find thousands of versions that people wrote about that particular passage.
Sitting through a class is tedious, boring and a waste ( according to students these days). That's why they are mostly unruly during class.
Too bad that the consequences fall down on teachers, that probably spend more time disciplining them than trying ways to interest them.
But they want to learn, when you find the "hook", you got them. Most popular teachers are the ones that found a way to relate to the students and keep up with them.

I have been a high-school teacher for 7 years, and I think a lot of the problem is outdated teaching methods. Some teachers downright refuse to be open minded. They insist on rigid conformity and the dreaded worksheets. Kids today need a more variable pace and activities that appeal to many different learning styles. Sitting and listening to a lecture for 85 minutes just doesn't cut it anymore. On the other hand, some of the responsibility lies with the kids. They don't yet realize that a broad curriculum is important to their overall intelligence and refuse to see any benefit in taking classes they don't find "interesting". Therefore, they don't even give it a chance. Like the post above, many of my kids think that they are the next 50 Cent. Seriously. I have probably 6 kids who are planning on rapping and producing for a living. We live in Southern Indiana. Having dreams and goals is very important, but they should not take a complete backseat to reality.

Because some classes are forced on us students that we would rather not take because we don't plan on having a career that utilizes that subject. Also, the way a class is taught and how hard they make it can push a student into not enjoying that class anymore.

Because (in the case of K-12 students) most of them don't want to be there in the first place and are less likely to be interested in a subject when they feel like it's being forced on them.
Even in college, kids take classes simply to fulfill requirements and often come across only a few classes they're genuinely interested in.
