Mars is the closest planet to Earth that humans can live on with minimal life support. The Moon has no atmosphere and Venus' atmosphere is too dense and hot for humans to survive on. So Mars is the most likely planet for humans to colonize, which will allow the human race to survive in case the Earth is made uninhabitable for some reason.

The other reason is science; Mars can possibly support life and discovering life on another planet would mean that it could exist everywhere in the universe. There are still some scientists who believe that life requires a very special set of circumstances to arise. If any kind of life was found on Mars, even fossils or microbes, that would solve one of the biggest questions in science.

mars is a waste of time. If the technology existed, we would already have colonies on the moon.

Too many to list. Let's put it this way, in order for humanity to survive after the sun dies, we must inhabit other worlds.
