if you are in the vegetative cycle its good to keep about 18hrs of light and 6hrs of pure darkness. Remember, the plants are very light sensitive so don't turn the lights on an off during the night cycle as this can alter the sex of the plant as Pot is dioecious. Make sure you are using a high pressure sodium bulb or Metal Halide that put out a minimum of 350W for every 3 SQ FT and keep the plants cool by placing a fan in the room, the wind from the fan will also keep the plant stems strong.
Keep the inter nodal lengths as tight as possible by trimming weekly and turn the lights to a 12hr on 12hr off schedule when you are ready to induce budding.

You should never give them more than about 35 minutes a day. Too much light can destroy the DNA polymerase which down the line can cause reverse transcriptase to function improperly. If you didn't grow MJ you'd probably understand this.

When they are young, not a lot.
When they are getting bigger, increase it to promote growth. Snip off the bottom leaves.
When they are mature, decrease it to send them a signal to produce.
I've never tried it, but it works on tomatoes.
