It's called Mad World by Gary Jules. It's a cover of a Tears For Fears song. I became obsessed with finding this song about a year ago and only about 4 months ago did I find it. If you want to get the whole Gary Jules album it's called Trading Snake Oil For Wolf Tickets. I'll be honest with you I've never really listened to the album because I bought it just for that song and once I ripped that song I was pretty much done with it.

"Mad World"
Tears for Fears did the original in the 80's.
Gary Jules covered it on the Donnie Darko soundtrack. It's slower and more haunting than the original, with less background instuments.
