i just started taking lexapro and alprazolam, because i found out that i was going through depression.the medicine has really made me feel better, the only problem is that at night after i take alpazolam and fall asleep, i start having lots of dreams, this dreams are not normal it's like i know i'm asleep and no matter how hard i try i wake my self up i can't, and i start to dream things that i am thinking about. this really does scare me because this never happen to me before and since i started taking the meds it's been happening every night. Can meds cause that?

Lexapro is an SSRI, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor

it is common to have VERY vivid dreams with that (effective) increase in serotonin. the meds can certainly cause it. If the dreams are just too much, your doc might change the balance of the 2 drugs.

Since you know the dreams aren't normal for you that, alone, is reason to discuss this with your doctor.

Medication can do all kinds of things, and if its the medication (or the combination of the different ones) that are causing it you need to tell the doctor right away because there could be the chance your dose is wrong. Someone I know had some mix of heart medication and some other medication cause him to see little horses dancing on the bureau! People thought he was losing his mind until the doctor changed his medication.

Talk to your doctor right away.

I don't know for sure. I think they can have that affect on your dreams though. I know that when I used a nicotine patch to help me quit smoking I would have some pretty vivid dreams if I slept with it on. The package said it could happen and it did. But, I thought it was kind of cool though. Hope you can find a way to enjoy the experience, if anything, just ask the doctor that gave them to you. Good Luck and Sweet Dreams.

I have had that happen without meds. I've never taken meds, actually.

I would be sleeping, and totally conscious that I'm in a dream, and my body wont move, and I can't make a sound. It's very frightening, actually... Usually after a few terrifying moments, I can force myself awake, but still, it is always a freaky aspect not to be able to move yourself.

During REM sleep, the level of sleep required to be dreaming, the body is actually in a state of paralysis, so your problem may be able to be attributed to this.

You need to talk to your doctor and your pharmacist. Are you getting the prescription from two different doctors? Those dreams can in fact be your a result of a very low blood pressure.
