Since I worked as a cub reporter, I can tell you it is due to some insider tips. However, since congress has started checking into this common practice, it is more difficult.
As for new companies, they will monitor the sales of stock offerings, through the eyes of a stock broker or a worker in a financial institution that deal with stocks and mutual funs.

A newspaper is a publication containing news and information and advertising, usually printed on low-cost paper called newsprint. It may be general or special interest, most often published daily or weekly. The first printed newspaper was published in 1605, and the form has thrived even in the face of competition from technologies such as radio, television, and the internet. Stories are picked using a variety of tools, the last nights news, internet stories, or just stories reported to the newspaper. If this doesnt help... click this link...

Newspapers get a lot of their information from PR companies that send them press release 'kits' containing photos, promotional pieces (toys, keyrings, pens and other samples) press releases (stories written by the business that promote themselves) and contact details. But when it comes to business, more often than not, a lot of the stories that feature are about businesses/companies that advertise with that particular paper. You can send a newspaper any information you want. Just address it to the Business Editor. However, try to make sure what you send them is interesting enough to get them to contact you. If you're really serious though, you'll buy some ad space with that paper and strike a deal with them to get them to write a feature story on you. They're called 'advertorials' - a cross between advertising and an editorial.

AS someone who works for a business magazine, I feel I can handily answer this one.
For major metropolitan areas, the business section is almost exclusively reserved for advertisers. You might be able to get a press release printed for about a 1-2 dollars a word. In order to get a feature story printed about your company, you need to either be an active advertiser or commit to being one by signing a contract. Call the business news desk at that paper for more details and their specific policies

Check the website for emails of reporters or editors. I have sent in suggestions, some are used and pursued, some are not.
You could call on the phone too.
