you were prescribed keflex which is a common antibiotic prescribed for bladder infections. that's what i usually take

the doctor will culture your urine-meaning he adds a small amount of the medication to some of your urine to make sure the drug is effective in treating the infection-it the tests proved the medication not to work-he would not have prescribed it to you.

some doctors have preferences on what medications they use and it also depends on what works best to treat your symptoms.

as long as you are starting to get better-that's all that matters....

I have had bladder infections for over 20+ years (since I was a baby). I have been on pretty much every antibiotic that they can think of! I think you are referring to a sulfa drug and those seem to be the most effective and most commonly prescribed. It seemed like a very aggressive drug and I ended up being allergic so of course I didn't have a good experience. It is very popular though. There are many different antibiotics that treat UTIs so it isn't weird that your friend was prescribed something different than you. I prefer macrodantin but there are plenty of drugs to help with the infection. Did the Dr prescribe anything for pain? If not, try AZO Standard. It works WONDERS! Hope you feel better soon!

Absolutely cephalexin is effective.....remember that each person is different and that what might work for your friend might not work for you - depending on your drug allergies, etc. Also, your urinalysis was probably cultured and different "organisms" are susceptible to different drugs. If you don't get better on cephalexin, you should contact your doctor again within a few days.

It is an antibiotic used for many different things, but you should talk to your Doctor if you have any??'s about your medication. You could call the Pharmacy also. Usually if you are allergic to penicillin, then they will give you cephalics. But remember, lots of Water. Drink 2x's the amount you normally do. You can also take Saw Palmetto berries( its comes in capsules) and it helps with the burning and pain...its totally natural and will not effect the antibiotics... Good luck, Best Wishes....

every physician has their own antibiotic of choice due to comfort or efficacy. usually sulfa based meds work well for gastrointestinal infections. cephalexin is a great med along with augmentin. i prefer to rx augmentin though.

If your doctor Prescribed Keflex, it was probably for a reason. Many different antbiotics have the same effect. Some docs prefer one drug over another and thats the reason for the different meds. OR, maybe you are on something that interacts with what your doctor usually uses and the Keflex is better suited to your condition.

the best thing is water, water, water to flush your system and cranberry juice or cranberry pills kills the bacteria that causes the infection.Lay off the soda, the acidity in soda actually causes bladder infections, caffeine and sugar feed bacteria that breed in the infection. Eat yogurt while taking the antibiotics, to keep from getting a yeast infection.
