You maximize the leverage required to actually open the door after you turn the knob. If the knob were close to the hinges, you would have to use a lot of muscle to open the door.

The amount of work needed to open the door is fixed, so to reduce the amount of force needed to open the door, the doorknob is placed far away from the axis point to maximise the distance between the force applied and the axis.

beco's you always pull it open from the oppisite side!!!If it were on the same side as the hinges there would be no axis to have it turn DUHHHHHHH youd have to pull it off its hinges???????????
