LONDON - Two hospitals in northwestern England will be offering head-to-toe gowns for Muslim women who request them, officials said Tuesday.

The burqa-style blue gown will be available from Nov. 1 for patients served by the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The trust operates two hospitals, the Royal Preston, and the Chorley and South Ribble.

"I noticed a gap in the market and thought that it would be great if there was a gown that helped to preserve a patient's modesty," said Karen Jacob, linen services manager for the trust, who designed the product.

Jacob said the gown could be adapted to show a user's whole face, or to expose only a strip across the eyeline.

The hospitals are believed to be the first in Britain to offer the full-cover gown.

No wonder these people don't assimilate with the rest of us...we're encouraging them not to!

It's a matter of personal belief and perspective, actually. Do we assimilate them or do they assimilate us? It is the preponderance of social behavior, attitude and belief that defines society itself.

Except that: modern societies have learned that social conformity is not a requisite for mainstreaming in societies but more of the issue of respect for individual customs and traditions.

I dont think there is anything wrong with offering full gowns, although its a little on the strange side. I wonder how the doctors will be able to check them when there covered from head to toe?

Pluralism is another form of healthy societal interaction. Assimilation is not the only valid form of societal practices.

I'm overjoyed to hear that people are making room for one another. We have far too many carbon copies of people and ideas happening right now.

We could give them all string bakini's and dieting manuals, ten pounds of makeup, cross necklaces, and cellphones...

Would this assimilation satisfy you?

why is there a need to assimilate? i think the new gowns is a great idea. it shows that people are opening up their minds to the fact that their are other religions out there with their own beliefs and mannerisms. dont be so quick to judge.

I don't think it's a matter of assimilation, it's more a matter of respecting other people's beliefs.

If everyone would be more accepting of the differences between us, perhaps there would be less strife
