By some squirls what you mean, but may not realise is
female squirrels. They also 'lose' the hair on their belly as well.
They use the hair to make the inside of their nest. The outside is made from twigs, and leaves.

Could be scabies or a disease of the skin. Probably using the hair to line their nests.

Of course it could be that they are pulling their hair out because they are trying to understand the tax code.
