One very real possibility is that dementia which is common after age 70, (to various degrees) causes behavior changes. The disease in not simply a memory problem. In fact, some of the behavior problems are serious including "Sun-downers Syndrome" when sweet, kind and typically charming individuals become paranoid, psychotic and mean.
This provides a biochemical response and is not their fault.
Other reasons that I find in my own parents who I care have surprised me. They have always been the very best and most wonderful people, who have given so much to others. At this time of life in their 80's, they have fear, anxiety, severe pain, poor hearing and chronic illness. This causes irritability.
I think CD's, cell phones, etc, confuse elders because most people resist change. Technology is intimidating to an 90 year old. They have had TV only half their life! Just imagine what their life was like as teenagers or young adults, and all the changes that have occured.
There are also many elders who are truly alone. Once they are placed somewhere safe, sometime family slowly slips away, visiting less often. Considering the sadness from being along, illness and pain, and dementia, this may explain your question.

I have noticed that. Some old people get really nasty. Don't know why. Maybe they have a lot of aches and pains and it makes them grumpy. We need to have patience. If we live long enough we will be there. I guess we'll find out then.

some elderly people are nice 'coz they were happy and satisfied when they were still young. but if they had a sad past, they're mean and rude and everything.
im not sure, but that's what our psychology teacher told us.

I think they don't feel good. Their bodies are worn out, they can't see or hear well, and they don't have a lot to look forward to. Some are jealous of youth.
