Look into getting a service dog. Not only would the dog be a companion and a helper but it would also be a converstion piece, so to speak. Other kids would come up, ask questions and your son would be able to explain about the dog, his disablity and what they are able to do as a team.

I would disagree with getting him a puppy since he is only 7, since YOU would be responsible for it, since puppies are like children, A LOT OF WORK! Most people get their children puppies, and the kids can't keep up with all the puppy needs and end up getting rid of the dog. Plus puppies are a bit high strung which can scare kids sometimes.

I'm not sure what type of disability your son has but a more mature dog (from a shelter 1-3 years old) medium size or cat is good, or a small animal he can tend to like a guinea pig or hamster...they make nice pets plus they are fairly quiet.

A pet is a lot of responsibility. If he is mentally disabled then he needs a calm animal that will not get angry when/if he plays a little too rough. Maybe a midsize dog, like a Coker Spaniel or Beagle or Shetland Sheepdog. If he is physically disabled, then maybe a cat that will sit in his lap and let him pet him would be a good choice. Maybe a Norwegian Forest Cat or a Scottish Fold.

I don`t know your sons disability, but i think a Dog would be best mebay you can work with the people to get a trained dog or get help to train the dog with you.
i bet your sons finds it very cool that his dog can do tricks.

Did you ever thought about horseback riding(special groups for disabled children).
I was a Volunteer for such a group for a couple years and the kids loved it the parents told me they were waiting all week for that 30 min or hour.

How about a cat or a small dog? I have both and I love them to bits.

I go mushy with my little dog (Jessie) cause he is always so affectionate and he definitely shows it too. Jessie follows me everywhere in my apartment. He even sleeps beside me every night. He is nothing but love and company for me. He is always happy. Likes dancing with his front paws up hopping around. He likes chasing after the big dogs. He thinks he's a tough little dog.

I also have a calico cat (Mai Tai) who also follows everywhere I go in the apartment. Mai Tai is also very affectionate and likes sitting on my lap. When I'm in bed she likes sleeping on my tummy. I had Mai Tai since she was a kitten. She's also a good hunter too. She once caught a bat and a mouse in the basement of my previous home. She would bring the bat and mouse up to show me what she caught. What a show-off she is!

Happy hunting for your new pet:)

depending on what you want the pet for .. to help or just to be there with your son?
I suggest a dog .. dogs are very friendly pets .. your son would love having one play with him and so on
a Cat can do too it plays and keeps your son company
but mind you that being disabled does not mean he should not take care of the pet he has .. I suggest that he takes full charge of the pet this way he will take responsibility too

A dog will be very loyal. I'd get a breed that is very good with children and then be sure to supervise your son with the dog so that he knows not to tease, or it will affect the dog's temperament and bonding with your son. Also, I would not get a puppy, rather I'd look for a full grown dog around 3 yrs old or more, that has outgrown that rambunctious stage and is already housebroken.

I would say a kitten, the owner usually already has them litter trained and on hard food, so they would be pretty easy to take care of. I have 2 adults and a kitten and they are very good companions. They are very cheap, Kitten food is only about at the most 5$ and it goes for around a week at the most. That is pretty good for a pet.

A dog or a cat would be nice for him. Dogs are better though because when he calls the dog at least the dog will come to him. Get a dog that is trained like someone else said.

maybe get him a turtle:
he can keep it in a cage inside or set of a place in ur backyard (it depends what kind of turtle)
they arent high maitence and shouldnt cause too much trouble. just dont let it out of sight if its in the backyard
ur son can sit play with it and it really cant get away that fast

all the other pets i can think of are too energetic and problematic except maybe a boring fish.

hope that helped!
