Ok are you ready for the trick. Most people think that you need to memorize 100 facts. That's a lot. But really lets think about this. 6 x 4 is the exact same thing as 4 x 6 right? Well Now the table is down to 50. The ones, you better know. We're down to 41. The twos are easy now we're at 33. The Threes are relatively easy so we'll just say 26. Fives are easy. Nines you can do on your fingers. You better know tens., So here we have it. 4x4, 4x6, 4x7, 4x8, 6x6, 6x7 6x8 7x7 7x8 and 8x8. 10 Facts that you REALLY need to memorize.

Don't think of it as 100 facts. Think of it as 10 and you're on your way.

I do, but they really are a waste of time. For instance: Multiply 17 X 17 in your head, you won't find those figures in the tables, but you can do it easy if you break the numbers down into their component parts:

Example: 17 = 10 + 7

The multiplication (10 + 7) (10 + 7)

10 X 10 = 100 10 X 7 = 70 7 X10 = 70 and
7 X 7 = 49 Now add the products in your head

100 + 70 + 70 + 49 = 289, See how simple it is.

Now square any number ending in 5 in your head.

Example: 35 X 35 = 1225
Take one of the fives and move it to the other factor.

It becomes 30 X 40 3 X 4 = 12, just affix the two zeros and you have 1200. Now just add 25.
you have 1225 See how simple it is.

try 15 X 15 10 X 20 = 200 Now add the 25
ergo 15 X 15 = 225

See how easy it is.

I'm in college and I still don't know all my one-digit multiplication facts (let alone 12's and 13's). I never did know them, either. I used to dread the game we played in like 3rd grade where we'd go around the room and have to try to give the answer to a multiplication fact faster than the other person. I've never been able to memorize that kind of fact. Supposedly it's because I'm dysexic.

I went to a school where the teachers will come by and quiz you on your multiplication table and smack you with a ruler when you mess up. Then you get to miss recess waiting outside their office practicing. I final pass this test when the girl next to me whisper the answer to me. Now, I know my multiplication tables cause it's been smack into my head as a child.

I do. All the way to 12 x12. I know my gozintos as well. I remember my math teacher, Mr. Kelly. He would walk around the classroom and point at someone and fire off a random multiple and we would respond with (hopefully) the correct answer. It became a pride thing, because the class would try to go as far as we could without missing and beat the previous record, and no one wanted to be the one to mess up. Now it's your turn :.6x9...12x12.that's gross, heh heh.......9x3......8x7....4x9... eleven x eleven(did I get U with that last one?)

I do. Although I'm still a little shaky on the 8's.
I'm finding that helping the kids with their homework is refreshing a lot of things.

I do. But that's probably due to being locked in a closet as a child with a crust of bread and half a quart of water. Nowadays, we just use calculators.
