It depends on how it is failing. One way (bad brushes) you turn the key and get nothing, even though the lights and everything are bright.

another way (bad starter drive or bendix) it will start to turn the engine over, but then will start spining very fast but not turning over the engine.

Another way: worn out bushings and high resistance: it will turn the engine over, but very slowly. The dashlights and radio will go dim, even with a new battery. The battery cables themselves will get hot to the touch..

(if the battery terminals themselves get hot, you may just have dirty terminals.)

Just happened over the weekend...my sis-N-law & me loaded up the kiddies for a trip to Target...and...click, click, click.

We had to switch cars!

She said that it had been taking a few turns before catching all week.
