Yes, I think it's called Antarctica. Be careful going au naturel though!

Legally, no. Every piece of land above sea level in the world has been recorded and claimed by existing countries. To maintain possession, official visits to such places are made at least annually. If you bought a small known island in any country and attempted to claim independence, it would be well nigh impossible (unless, let's say, you bought a black market nuclear weapon and told everybody so they would keep clear...).
Some isolated islands are unihabited and very small, and if you were stranded, you could easily die long before anyone found you. Look up Baker Island which is property of the US: it's less than a kilometer long (barely half a mile) and is no higher than 6 metres (20 feet) above sea level. It's a pile of sand and bird guano in the middle of the ocean, nothing more.
Others are "inhabited" just so countries can claim it's in their possession. Read about "Dokdo", an island between Korea and Japan. Both claim to own it, but it's Koreans who live there and possess it. The whole thing is 300 metres by 300 metres of jagged rocks. It's completely unsustainable and people live there solely for political purposes. (Ownership of the island is now becoming a VERY hot topic because a large natural gas deposit was discovered underneath; neither Korea nor Japan have *any* fossil fuels on their land except at Dokdo.)
There are small enough and isolated enough islands around the world where someone could live as they wish and nobody would pay attention if you kept a low profile. There are small islets off the coast of British Columbia in Canada, the Florida Keys, some abandoned islands in England, the Philippines, India, the Azores, Indonesia and other places, and those are just the ones I can name.
Arthur C. Clarke, author of "2001", lives on and owns such an island in the Indian Ocean (Sri Lanka claims the island), though I doubt Clarke runs around naked on the beach.
About the only way you _could_ start your own country is if a volcanic surge created one in international waters and you managed to claim it first and gain recognition by the UN. Even so, living on it would be next to impossible since it would be (a) small, (b) dead, just hardened lava (c) isolated: every country in the world has at least a 200 mile limit off of its shores into international waters, and some reach even further.

Watch the movie Castaway with Tom Hanks. Living alone on a desert island is not all its cut out to be. First, if you have an accident, there is no rescue squad. You can lay there and die and nobody would know the difference. Second, if you don't work, you don't eat. If you get sick, there's no way to feed yourself. Third, when you're fed up with people it sounds really attractive, but when you get there and spend 6-8 months without so much as a 'Howdy doo?' it starts getting really old really fast. The better thing to do is to study a resource I just found that equips you with the tools needed to deal with ignorant, or immoral people. Make it your life goal to teach others this one primary quality of society and the results will be, 1 a new feeling about people, 2 a feeling of fulfillment, 3 an ability to reason with unreasonable people. http://www.users.bigpond.com/smartboard/decline/moral.htm

I know a guy who got dropped off on a deserted island in the South America reigon. Its not that it was out in the middle of nowhere, but just far enough away from civilation and close enough to islands with villages. He said he lived naked on coconuts, canned food and boiled water. He made his own fires, had lanterns....just lived off the land for a while. He flagged down some boaters, like the ones who dropped him off months prior, and went home.
I think he could have lived there for much longer and no one would have bothered him. Its just that he had family and stuff back in the real world to deal with.
Nice to have done it tho...Im a little envious. It would be wonderful to do that, even with a few others...a few others you TRUST will be courtous and live in the utopia with you.

Yes there are many small islands in the pacific that would fit the bill.
However, most of them (if not all due to GPSs) are infact owned by someone or some government.
So unless you got like 25million to toss around, you'll probably be squatting on someone else's land.

My dad lived in Panacea Fla,and if you sneezed you would drive right through it.I think the smallest police station is nearby(seriously) in a phone booth. He lived near a wildlife reserve(his backyard)..That place was tranquil and I miss it.May he rest in peace.I am glad he(Vet) got to experience that piece of heaven, while he was here on earth.

dude, you can practically do that here in some really remote places of the us. but what about rural alaska or canada? or somewhere in the south pacific?
but the real question is, without government, people can turn pretty bad and no one stops them. so how are you going to 100% protect yourself against possible thieves, mauraders, bandits, etc.
if there's no government, than the toughest folks win...

It's my favorite fantasy!
Hijack a plane and parachute to some remote island with a backpack of essentials.
Not worth coming to hunt me down for justice and it sure beats a lame choice like suicide.
