Currently the new son of Prince Akishino is third in line for the throne (after Crown Prince Naruhito and Prince Akishino). If Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako have a son, that son would be second in line, then Prince Akishino, then Prince Akishino's son.
But I think Japan should change their succession laws to allow females to succeed. Just because sexism is traditional doesn't mean it's right or ok. The Swedish Act of Succession was changed in 1980 to allow equal primogeniture (first born succeeds, regardless of sex), I don't see why it's controversial in 2006 for Japan to do the same.
As it is, it seems like a huge waste of talent or possible talent, especially since there are so many females in the imperial family. I think it sucks that Crown Princess Masako, who is really smart and talented and educated to take advantage of both, is being denied the chance to exercise her talents. And who knows what else the next generation (Princesses Aiko, Mako, and Kako) could be capable of given the chance.

If limited to those two choices, I'd think I'd choose Princess Kiko's newborn son, not because I think that a woman shouldn't be empress, but because going with the male heir respects the longstanding Japanese tradition. Traditions are symbolic and sentimental, and the Japanese monarchy is only symbolic as well. Lacking any real power, it serves only as a link to Japan's cultural history (both good and bad). So why disrupt 1,500 years of tradition now that there's no compelling reason to do so?
Now, if the ruler had any real power, then I'd be more inclined to favor Aiko (Princess Masako's daughter), if only because of all the brutal pressure Princess Masako has had to endure. THAT would be an interesting debate, wouldn't it?
However, we should remember that there are still two men who come before the little tyke in the line of succession: his own father, Akishino, and Crown Prince Naruhito. So, unless I'm misunderstanding how the succession to the throne works, I doubt either 4 year-old Aiko or the newborn is likely to be Japan's monarch.
Nonetheless, it's must be a very happy day in Japan!

Well, from what i know..... Only males from the royal bloodline are allowed to become the heir..... so unless they change that, Princess Kiko's son would be the next emperor unless the Princess Masako gives birth to a boy......
Personally, they should get rid of thet law..... I mean, what if there are no male heirs at all???
So i guess, yeah... Princess Masako's daughter should be given the throne...

Well, since the tradition of male heirs taking over the crown dates back 1500 years for the Chrysanthemum throne, I suspect that yes he will be the next emperor. There hasn't been an empress on the throne for a very, very long time. If there had been another girl born to Princess Kiko, I think an argument could have been made to change the tradition and let Princess Aiko take the throne. Now it is a moot point since there is now a male heir. If he makes it to adulthood, Japan won't change a thing. They are very traditional.

I actually think that the oldest heir should become the next emperor, regardless of that childs sex. I know that Princess Masakos daughter is older ( as Princess Keiko's son was born today), so I think that they should change their..tradition....I know before the birth of the son, 80% of Japan's population wanted to change the inheritance rule ( that only male heirs can become emperor), while now, it is around 60%....since I am not Japanese, I guess I really wouldnt understand everything, but that is just my opinion

Kiko's son will become heir. The female succession movement is now officially DOA. There's a %99 chance Shinzo Abe will be the next PM, and he's already on record as being very much opposed to female succession. The only chance it ever had was it's potential necessity, gender equality was just a fringe benefit.

Hillary is the in worry-free words lady to ever make a severe run on the presidency. there'll be others. i think we can see a lady president interior the subsequent few elections. so a concepts there have been very few women qualified to be president (even if to be honest Hillary change right into a minimum of as qualified as Obama, even if it really is no longer affirming a lot of something). Obama and McCain apologized to seem politically desirable and kiss human beings's asses. they did not take care of Hillary any more beneficial unfairly than they dealt with every person else that i ought to tell. There are those who do not cope with her quite yet they're sinking into the minority. We ain't all informed lets be even if we opt to be, male or lady. the position are those variety of human beings which will let us know that? I confident as hell did not meet too a lot of them. enable me rephrase what I stated in the previous. Hillary is the first to make a severe run who change into everywhere on the point of being qualified for the interest. Hillary wasn't any more beneficial of a frontrunner than Obama change into although. i'd've truly voted for her over Obama because I do imagine she makes more beneficial positive judgements than he does yet "path blasing" as you spelled it doesn't make one a strong baby-kisser. you seem to be one among those those who would vote for someone because she's a lady and then turn round and get on human beings for vote casting for someone because they're a guy.

I think Masako's daughter should be Empress. Why does it have to be so sexist anyway? What is wrong with a female princess leading her country? She was born first and she should be heir in all things with her brother behind her! Japan should base its monarchy on first born, not gender.

Girl Power! Hell, even Queen Elizabeth finally agreed to make the first-born child of the current King/Queen the next monarch regardless of gender.
