There is only one reason ants can be crawling over your plants - aphids, be they black, green or the white variety. Aphids are the milk cattle for ants. This means the ant's colony is not far from your plants. In fact, just below about 1-2 feet away.
There is product call "rototone" which is made from dried chrysthanemum root. It comes in a squeezable container so that you can dust the whole plant. Or, the other suggestions above are good, except you must do it after every rain.
The other sure fire way to get rid of the ants is to drown the colony. Take the hose and the three-prong rake, find an entrance and start the flood. Pull the soil away until you see the larvae wash away. Keep at it until all the larvae are flushed to the surface, and no more ants the neighbourhood of your plants, forever! I did this and they never built another colony in the same place.

Best way to eradicate ants from the plant, according to my experience is, firstly to pour left over soda, beer, wine etc., though it is very small quantity at the bottom of the plant. Secondly the waste tea leaves or coffee power you get after extraction of the liquor can be left near the roots of the plant on the surface. These things drive away not only ants but also almost all pests attacking plants. do it for about 4 or 5 days continuously and your ants will go away.
Another important thing is the above wastes are also very good manure and the plants growth will be amazing

We used black and red pepper. Worked good. Sprinkle a mix of this anywhere you see ants. Good luck.
