I think even in ancient times, there were atheists & skeptics who saw the mythological stories as just that. My hat is off to them; science was much less advanced back then, and it was very easy to ascribe unknown phenomena to divine or supernatural origins. Today we have scientific explanations for just about everything. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to have done much to reduce the number of people who think along mystical or magical lines in our society. Our modern-day "mythic past" is alive and well in the form of our modern religions....

the earliest recorded religion was in mesopotamia or iraq today, and later egypt, stories date back to 3500 to 1900 bce then many years later the bible is written between 900 and 500 bce
some of the stories are obviously plagiarized and changed as cultures took over other cultures and integrated religions changing names and what not.
from the earliest recorded religions it is easy to see that it is used to validate the king or priests rules ,and control the changes in society, women enjoyed a status comparable to men at one point until the akkadian gods of the new dominant culture replaced all the goddesses and diminshed the power of women, since there was alot of warring and overthrowing going on and each city state fought in the name of their own god, they most likely saw through the bs as they themselves were writng their own bs allowing them to invade neighboring kingdoms in the name of god
invasions and being occupied by others are reasons to not believe, also this ancient society accurately mapped the movements of the planets ,the sun creating a solar calendar very advanced however they also believed in astrology and though all their gods today are gone, they provided the archetypal scapegoat, hero on an epic journey ,sex makes you a man theory et cetera and astrology is still alive and well today as well as the way we tell time 60 minutes is an hour 60 seconds is a minute, and the days of our week are all names of greek gods, or whatever myths, thor and frieda are from, the point is religion is everywhere from way back in the day it affects us today, in our everyday language and symbols, so for the most part we have failed to break from the mythic past in more ways than one.
today some of us see through the self serving bs and the claims of being holy and good do not jibe with the intolerant crap and the demand for blind faith or closed mindedness, and these early civilizations probably had the same issues , but they had one advantage, they were not afraid to think for themselves, knowledge was a good thing and the priests were astronomer priests ,these people were earlier yet subsequent civilizations were more backwards using the inaccurate lunar calender, and there were philosopher pre socrates trying to find answers, in ancient athens alot of merchants did heavy commerce and trading so this one little area was full of diversity so merchants were said to be the first philosophers as they had to become tolerant and deal with other cultures on a daily basis and learn about strange customs or beliefs and question and compare, sorry for being a jerk and giving a long answer , I just reflexively do the opposite that is asked of me ,sometimes.

While at one time the feminine mysteries were valued, along with intuition and spiritually perceived truths; with the rise of the patriarchy logic became of supreme importance, to the devaluing of intuition and the feminine. What was not provable by logic was increasingly seen as a sign of low intelligence, if one were to continue to speak of it being true.

They had a little more time to sit down and think, instead of struggling for existence every waking moment
