It can be seperated by distilation if the different conponets of a mixture have a different boiling point. When it gets to the temperature of the componet that you want you catch the vapor and when in condensates you have the compound that you want.

by adding the mixture in a distillation flask,heating it on a tripod stand cone ct a condenser and thermometer ,place a beaker at the tip of a condenser,and stop heating when the temperature just starts to rise above boilin point.the sperated version would be distilled in the beaker.

Components separate by weight. Heavier elements sink. This is fractions are obtained. Crude oil separates into several fractions with different uses, gas being one.
