Depending on what countries you want to visit or how far you want to travel, I recommend any of these cities/places:
- Munich is a good place to go... especially the "Die Schwemme" restaurant in the Augustiner Bräuhaus - live music, find your own table or share a long one with others. It was definitely a cultural experience.
- Salzburg is also a good place to go if you want a relaxing place to visit....
- Venice and Rome are also interesting places to visit, depending on how far you want to go. Venice is interesting with all the canals and the main plaza (which has pigeons everywhere that you can feed); Rome is an interesting cultural experience with all the ancient ruins.
- Also, southern Switzerland has some amazing views and cool some towns and cities you can visit (Lugano, Como, Bellinzona)
- Copenhagen, Oslo, and Bergen (Norway) are all great northern cities, but I haven't visited these cities in the winter, so I couldn't comment on the weather from mid December to mid January - so that may be a deterent from going to these cities, in addition to them being so far north.

Go to Slovakia! It's a forgotten corner of Europe, but very near Austria. The landscape are immensely beautiful, especially the mountains, the old towns are exciting, the overall prices are among the lowest in central Europe, the beer is among the best (and cheapest ...) in the world, the people are kind and friendly, and the railways ... ah! the railways are just wonderful, like the old world of 50 years ago, crossing idyllic villages, forests, creeks, valleys, meadows, mountainsides ...
Don't concentrate on the industrialized Western parts (and the capital Bratislava), instead, go straight East! If you want a big city, visit Kosice, if you want a middle city, go to Presov and if you want nature sceneries, villages and mediaeval towns, just travel around the central-Eastern areas from Banska Bystrica/Banska Stiavnica to Presov/Kosice.

If you are in Austria you can take the train to
Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

In Europe you will discover 1000's of youthful teenagers taking the practice around Europe. And those teenagers are from each and every u . s . a ....They purchase Eurail passes and bypass throughout...they trip from city to city.....stay in infants hostels, lease motorcycles or in simple terms walk. We met teenagers who took the practice at night to the farthest [place everywhere it became) slept on the practice and worked their way around Europe like that. i does not recommend it yet you will meet teenagers from each and every u . s . a . interior the worldwide and it rather is a great journey. do a splash diagnosis approximately it. you may desire to get Eurail passes on your u . s . a . in the previous you go away.

Try Osnabrueck, Germany A very old and historic city. Some tourist crap but easy to get off the beaten path and get into the real people. Nice folks and willing to help you out anyway they can....best to know a little German language though. And if you run into anyone named Kreft, tell them one of their cousins says hey!
