While it is possible, it's a rare occurrence. I worked in emergency medicine for over 7 years and been in medicine for over 15 years and I've never seen one incident where the handle came off or was even severely damaged. Considering everything else than can kill your child in an accident, I'll take the car seat!

Pretty much all of the manuals (and I just checked the stickers on my son's infant seat) do say to put the handle up (or down depending on the make and model) while in the vehicle.

Yes I have In fact when I had my 3rd child I was sent by a friend to a car seat clinic being hosted by local law enforcment, There police officers and ER nurses and Docs told stories of accidents involving improper use of car seats. We were also taught how to install car seats correctly. At the end warning and tips were given and the big one was about the handles of infant carseats, These are to be used as handles and in the upright position only when out of the vehicle, and down when it is placed in the car, They can be sheared off and impale your baby or other passengers in the car, I was a little skeptical, I asked my friend who is a police officer for dps and he said he had seen this happen himself! Strange but, TRUE!

I imagine if the baby wasn't buckled in properly, the force of him slamming up against it could kill him. I know on my sons' infant car seats, the instructions said to ride with the handle folded back--not in the locked, upright position (like you'd have it when carrying the child). I've never heard of this happening, but I'm sure they put the warning on the car seats for a reason. :)

When I had my baby they told me to put the handle down, becuase if I were to get in an accident, and the seat belt broke, the handle could catch the babies neck. It was the first I heard of it as well.

I guess if there was enough force that it could possibly break it making it a stabbing hazard. I have also heard and read that the handle should be kept down while driving. I always kept it down until I was getting my son's seat out.
