I know what you mean. The crime here (atlanta) has gotten awful. I've stopped watching the news.

Of course it's possible to have nightmares about something that is occuring in your city after watching the news. It's even possible to have nightmares about something that happened in another city because the potential could be there.
I had nightmares about where I work being attacked after 9/11. Two years later, a co-worker came in fired several rounds, went into the general manager's office (who escaped) and killed himself. We later learned that he'd killed his ex-girlfriend and a roommate of her's. I still have nightmares.

Sure it is possible. Some people have no value for life - even though many of us do. People get killed for some useless and senseless reason - like for wanting someone's hubcaps, or their tennis shoes or jacket. It is a tragedy that we have to live in times like this. Sometimes, moving out of a big city helps - but there is no guarantee - there are creeps everywhere. Buy a good lock for your door and close the blinds - get a good rest if you can.
