my friend was a 12lb baby and her sister was a 11 1/2lb baby and her husband and all his siblings were up around 10lbs

her sister did quit smoking with her two and they were both 11+lb babys and she had to have c-sections with them both to get them out. (and shes built bigger than my friend is)

Ok yes I have to say that My own doctor advised me not to quit cold turkey and if I did I should expect a very large baby he did however ask me to cut down..... I had a 9lb 13 oz baby my second and I was expecting my 3rd, The doctor had seen that I had a very hard time delivering my 2nd and told me that smoking causes lower birth weight.... Now I cut down ALOT but continued smoking right up to the day I gave birth, My 3rd is very Happy, Healthy, No medical probs whatsoever and he was born at 7 lbs 8oz still a very round kiddo! This is of course contreversial, but for me it's a personal choice.

No amount of smoking is safe. With every cig you smoke, your baby is also getting the toxins. If your baby were born, in your arms today, would you blow smoke directly into it's face? Quitting cold turkey will NOT harm your baby. People use that excuse so they don't have to do it. Not only is quitting cold turkey safe, it's one of the best things you can do for yourself and your baby while you're pregnant. As soon as you give up your cigarettes, your baby will start getting more oxygen, and the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, and other complications will drop. Quitting cold turkey can be difficult, especially if you're a heavy smoker. As your body adjusts to life without nicotine, you'll probably feel restless and irritable. The good news is that your baby won't share in the misery. There's no evidence that babies go through nicotine withdrawal, and they certainly won't miss a daily dose of tar and carbon monoxide. Besides, your withdrawal symptoms will fade in two or three weeks, and then you can finally stop thinking about cigarettes and start thinking about getting the baby's room ready. LOL @ thumbs down. Whoever did that show me PROOF that quitting cold turkey is harmful to an unborn baby. I don't care what anyone says. Smoking while pregnant IS selfish now. Now we know things we didn't know 20 years ago. You wouldn't let your one year old light up a smoke...why? because it is harmful. But is okay to smoke when it is known that your unborn baby is effected by smoking? The reason is because it is "you" that is wanting the smoke. So people that smoke make up excuses making it more okay for them to continue to do so.

I highly doubt the doctor told her not to quit smoking so she would have a "low birth weight" baby. He probably told her that pregnancy was not a great time to quit smoking because the baby would be going through withdrawls as well as the mother. I know, I quit smoking when I found out I was pregnant for my daughter. But no doctor in their right mind would instruct someone to do something unhealthy like smoking just so they could have a low birth weight baby, at least not a decent, reputable doctor licensed in the U.S.

That doctor's a quack & shouldn't be practising medicine! Birth weight depends on genetics. I knew I'd be having a 9 lb son since his older 2 1/2 brothers were 9 lbs. If not for that, I'm sure I would've had a smaller baby as I was a 7 lber & my brother was too.

Most doctors will tell you to quit smoking whether you're pregnant or not

yes i know a few people that has happened to. as they have really big baby's and for the fact that your baby is "hooked" so if you try to quit after your 1 month along it puts extra stress on the baby and the mother and that is not good while your pregnant as stress can kill the baby and possibly the mother.

and people that haven't been through it shouldn't talk!

That doctor should have his license pulled! if he actually said that at all! Smoking has been proven to cause learning problems such as ADHD and ADD, and that baby would have a higher chance of developing asthma! My mom smoked with all 4 of us kids and we all have ADD and one of my sisters has severe asthma. She is now 42 and just had to go to the ER the other night because of an attack. She is putting her kids at risk for future problems!

No that's not normal i would tell her to have a second opinion. If another doctor tells her the same thing that's different.
