You'll be surprised. Things you might think will hurt, don't always. Especially some body modifications. If you have A LOT of adrenalin, it helps. That too can only get you so far. But after awhile it's sort of a dull/numb "pain".
I think it's a great idea to get your sons footprint. It means something. Who knows, it might be an empowering experience.
As for places that wont be "too painful". Try the more fleshy areas. Like leg, arm, even back. My friend got a tattoo from his elbow to his shoulder and he said the only time it really was sort of painful is when the needle touched the boney part of his shoulder.
If you are going for a more symbolic place, that is up to you to decide. I've seen footprints done over the foot and over a heart, but really if you want it to be a symbolic place... that's another decision.
Keep in mind, EVERYONE is different. You may be surprised with the sensation and how much "pain" is actually involved.

i was a sissy as well when i first got my tattoo a week ago. I hate needles so they guy made a great suggestion for me. i got it on my back right shoulder and did not feel a thing and the best part is that i did not see the needle. oh also start up a conversation with the tattoo artist it should distract you. good luck :o)

What kind of Father calls their kid a wimp? Just love him for who he is and do more togetherness time and bond with him and let him watch you. Kids learn from their parents. You must be a wimp too!

Well first off Im sorry for your loss... but I have to ask... why would you want someone else to tell you what to get to memorialize your son? We didnt know him or anything about him so anything we say won't be as special. And its going to hurt... plain and simple.... I have 15 and each and everyone hurt to different degrees... I would take some more time and think about the time you spent with your son and get ideas from there.... and just know its not going to tickle...

I think that is a such a sweet idea, but I have to warn you my friend got her sons foot tattoed and it looks like a big piece of mud stuck to her foot. It looks really bad because it is hard to tattoo such a tiny foot print to have all the detail in it. I would suggest a rosemary anklet and have a cross dangling on your foot with his birthdate on it or name. Tattoes really dont hurt, I find them so relaxing kinda like acupunkture. Take a friend with you to hold your hand, and so sorry about your son passing.

i have my daughters name tattooed across my shoulder blade. it didn't hurt as much as i thought. they said it was one of the best places for tattoos as far as pain goes. the color will stay really well. had mine for almost five years without needing any touch ups. a small footprint would look really cute there with his name and the "dates" underneath it. you know that is one you won't regret, so go for it!!!!!!

I'm so sorry about your son, and I think his foot would be a lovely way to memorialize him!
My daughter got a small colorful sun on her shoulderblade. This works well because there it's easy to either show or cover up, as you wish. She got hers touched up after one year, too.
Or maybe in a small size right over your heart? Wrist?

its only painful if you are a whimp... I have 5 so far and I think the worst pain that i had was on the outside of my right ankle... i just kept telling myself it will be over soon and then it will be fine... then a few months ago i got it touched up...
The upper shoulder or back or the top of the foot are good places... you sould put his foot on your foot so it could be like he is always walking with you.

If its in memory of your child, I think you should follow your heart and get a Tattoo. You can get his portrait, footprint, name...get whatever your heart tells you to get. I think this pain will be worth it
Good luck with the tattoo and my deepest sympathy to you

Think of your son as their doing the tatoo that should help you endure the pain.
ALSO
Make sure it's a good tatoo place and that they open the needle in front of you. Avoiding infections can also prevent pain.
