It could be a RAM issue.where too many TSR programs running in the background. Try closing out any programs running in the Windows system tray located down by your clock.
It could be a Firewall issue. For example, the latest version of Zone Alarm has been causing me problems lately slowing my Internet to a crawl at times. I turned it off, and turned on the Windows XP firewall, and it's been running smooth ever since.
Make sure you never run Windows XP firewall and Zone Alarm at the same time. This will tend to slow you down, so choose one or the other.
Lots of Ad-ware and Spy-ware can slow you down as well. To start go to www.download.com and pickup a copy of Ad-aware, and Spy-Bot Search and Destroy. Both are free, and both will help. Consider buying products from Norton or MacAfee when you can afford too. You get what you pay for.
Viruses and Trojan Horses can slow you down as well. Virus scan your PC regularly. AVG is a free virus scanner:

But I seriously recommend purchasing a virus scanner from Norton or MacAfee. Again, you get what you pay for.
Bad phone lines (noisy phone lines) can also slow you down.
Bottom line. Lots of stuff can slow you down. Your going to have to play around and find where the problem is.

Humm I have a 2.4 ghz and 40gb drive in my laptop with 256mb ram. It runs ok. but I know of desktop brands like from walmart HP that they put slow HD's in them. My dell seems ok. This sony I'm on is a 2.6ghz and an 80 gig hd in it. runs great too but I bumped it up to a gig of ram.
You got a cheap computer or hard drive. And could have some spy ware running in the background.
Do a CTRL, ALT and delete one time and check it out and see what all is running. You can be selectave and start turning off things and see if it speeds up any. But that still may not find the Spy ware.

These are all good answers. One additional thing I would add is to suggest you delete the temp files from your computer. Many of the files may be 0kb in size but they can definitely slow down the works.
Good Luck,
Michael

Chances are that you're either lacking in RAM, or you've got some sort of malware running in the background eating up all your resources. If you've got 256MB of RAM, you may wanna upgrade to at least 512MB.
If you've got 512MB, then chances are that it's some sort of malware. Do a virus scan, spyware scan, and adware scan.

Check your startup folder first to make sure that memory hogs aren't loading themselves first - Adobe and some browsers are notorious.
