I don't believe it's appropriate to call parents by their first names. Parents are supposed to be strong guiding figures, and calling them by their first name makes them sound as if they are trying to be just a friend and not a parent. There are too many parents who do not discipline their children and would rather be a friend than a parent. It is important for reciprocal respect, but parents should be called mom and dad, unless of course there is a step parent involved. I have always called my parents mom and dad.

I call both my parents Mom and Dad i would never call them by their first name. But my friend on the other hand usually calls her parents by their names. In a way I think its disrespectful but if the parents don't mind i don't think its that big of a deal.

My kids still call me mommy. I've heard kids call their parents by the first name too and the only way I think that is appropriate is if it's a stepparent. I wouldn't want my kids to place me on the same level as thier friends.

No it is not appropriate, I am almost 19 and I still call my parents mommy and daddy. I have been doing it my whole life and don't plan on ever stopping. I think it is a term of endearment and I know my mom would be hurt if I suddenly started calling her Donna.

I call my mom Ma and my dad, dad, but sometimes I call them by their first names when they aren't listening to me. I'm a grown woman. I know they would smack the crap out of me if they could catch me.

I think that parenthood is about respect, and I have instilled in my children that we are Mommy and Daddy or Mom and Dad.....But then again, my kids also call adults they meet Mr or Mrs. followed by their last names........Call me old fashioned I guess.........

No, it is a lack of respect, it is trying to put yourself on equal ground & taking away the fact that they are the parent.
