A student council consist of 15 student . six comitee are to be selected

I) Two council member have the same major and are not permitted to serve together on a comitee. How many ways can a comitee of six be selected from the membership council

Combinations are the sum of the combinations using one of the paired majors and non-using one of the paired majors.

A = have same major
B = do not have same major

Figure combinations for 1A X 5B and add to combinations for 6B

Combinations for selecting 1 A is 2.
Combinations for selecting a set of 5 from 13 is 13!-8!
Combinations for selecting a set of 6 from 13 is 13!-7!

Possibilities if one of the As is picked is 2(13!-8!).
Possibilities if neither of the As is picked is 13!-7!.

Add together 2(13!-8!)+13!-7!

I don't know much about statistics, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.

I believe I am reading the question differently from the above two answers. I am assuming you are picking only one committee of 6 members.

it will be 2*14C5=2*14*13*12*11*10/1*2*3*4*5=4004 ways
keep one of the two doing the same major out so 14C5
then with the other one out another 14C5
so 2*14C5

Above guy is right except I think it should be 14C6 instead of 14C5 because there are 6 committees to form

Its very easy you just use the "combination" rule of both eleminating one and do it yourself it will help you in future.
