Does it just mean to get robbed?

I'm going to take a W.A.G here and guess it started from purse snatching, getting a purse 'ripped off' your shoulder?? yes it means to be robbed, or scammed, or cheated

(w. a.g. = wild a** guess)

It became popular in the 60s, and means to be scammed or robbed.

I dunno, I remember saying it in '71 when I was in high school.

I think we've some good guesses here. Another might be from Surfer Slang, they call the curl a 'rip curl' sometimes, I believe. Being "ripped off" might mean being torn from your surf board by a wave.

I know the term "bummer" as in "bummer, man", lol, came from the Hell's Angels -- falling off yer bike onto yer bum (***) was called a bummer and eventually meant any bad thing.
