Can you see what prescriptions you receive via your health insurance?

Question

I just moved out, but I am still on my parent's health insurance until the end of the year. Can they see when I've been to the doctor and what prescriptions I've received? Can they see this through the insurance company? I am only asking because my dentist leaked info to them about my teeth. Teeth aren't a big deal, but I don't need them to know every time I go to the doctor or get a prescription.

if you're over 18, they shouldn't be able to find out.. and your doctor shouldn't even be speaking to them about your health issues

Each time you use your parent’s insurance, they should receive a summary of what was paid for and what they owe the health care provider. That typically will not include specific drug prescription information, but they can access that information since they own the policy that helps subsidize your treatment. They should be able to get a copy of your medical records by filling out an “Authorization to Release Patient Health Information” or something similar to this. Unfortunately there’s not a lot you can do until you have your own policy, unless you can ask the people treating you to keep your personal information confidential – or tell your parents you’d like a little privacy.
