I heard this from one person(my older sister) years a go, but can find no one else that agrees, so far.

if the its a kitty maybe but if the cat is an adult then it would be the other way around.

They are carnivores but that certainly doesn't mean they attack everything with the intent of harming it. I would never, ever trust them around rodents. But they would most likely just try and engage a cat in play. Unless the ferret had serious behavorial issues I just can't see them killing a cat.

No. I have heard they can kill rodents or small pets though. They are hunters in nature so I think they could kill a small something, not a cat though. I cant see my ferrets doing this though. They are so nice and lazy.

Jumped up Jimney crickets another bad rep for the ferrets! No the modern ferret has been domesticated so much so that the killer in them is gone!

Or will the cat hunt and kill the ferret first?

I did have a ferret that attempted to kill a kitten (not a cat). He grabbed onto it's throat and was very much intending on killing it. Thankfully, he didn't because we stopped it. We kept the kitten and him seperated and eventually when the kitten was bigger re-introduced them again and they get along great now.

I have heard the same a few time. Not sure if it's true but I can see how it can be. Ferrets are lovly, but can do a lot of damage to someone/thing if they choose to.

Our three ferrets think our six cats are toys. The cats think the ferrets are also.

They get along pretty well, at least here.

Ferrets are carnivores, therefore they can attack other animals, even cats. Whether or not it ends up in death, no one can truly say.
Having pets that are instinctual hunters, is a risk in itself, and should always be attended around other species..
