Tails are used throughout the animal world for various uses. Cows and horses use them to swat flies away from their bungholes, cats use their tails to show various emotion, lemurs hang from trees with tails, monkeys use them to help balance when moving around treetops. So, tails do have a purpose....

Some animals use them for balance. Maybe they're used to express emotion, the motion of a dog's tail changes as it's emotions change.
