It doesn't really matter which one. It's most dependent on the food you feed, the size of the cage, whether the cage has adequate ventilation, and how often it is cleaned (and what type of bedding you use, and how absorbent it is.).
As for personality....I prefer hamsters. Gerbils are quicker and more independent. If they get loose, they are pretty hard to find and capture.

Get a rat! they are friendlier smarter and make much better pets!
they can even learn tricks
any rodent will smell if you dont change its cage regularly

they both stink lol. hamsters maybe more.
